Crochet Some Hygge – Free Cozy Patterns from Karla’s Making It

Crochet Some HyggeCrochet Some Hygge

Here in California we have been having rain like crazy.

I mean seriously crazy! Inches and inches fall every week. I don’t think we typically get more than an inch or so. We have been in a severe drought situation for years…

Not anymore! I’m told we are not totally in the clear but we are no longer listed as severe – YAY!

Anyway, along with all that rain, it’s been unusually COLD. Typically we will have 70F degree days this time of year. NOPE! Not this winter.

So I decided to take advantage of still experiencing cold weather by setting a warm fire, getting my cup of tea, and work on some Hygge crochet!

What is Hygge?

‘ Hygge ’ (pronounced ‘Hoo-ga’) is a Danish word, which means coziness.

I love cozy! Don’t you?

Imagine snuggling on the sofa with a cozy blanket, wearing your favorite blanket sweater while crocheting, enjoying a hot meal with family, drinking a warm cup of tea -all that is Hygge.

We do already have tons of free afghan, baby blanket, baby bootiesnewborn cocoons, cup cozies, granny square blankets, rugs, shawls and wrap patterns that qualify as Hygge here on Karla’s Making It.

But I wanted to add a few more cozy patterns that I have left on my to do list from winter, so here you go…

Update on The BEST – Most Lovely Crochet Flower Rug Ever Challenge and a New Sweepstakes from my favorite yarn company!

Crochet Flower Rug

Crochet Flower RugUpdate on The BEST – Most Lovely Crochet Flower Rug Ever Challenge and a New Sweepstakes from my favorite yarn company!

Hello My Crocheting Friends,

The BEST – Most Lovely Crochet Rug Ever Challenge has been a very popular post here on Karla’s Making It and I wanted to give you an update on my progress.

If you remember, we have been drooling over these fabulous rugs…

UPDATE – The Dahlia Flower Crochet Rug Pattern is now available in the KMI Shop!

Crochet Flower Rug

Man, every time I look at these I want one so badly!

I have been working with flower patterns, crocheting my little fingers to the bone and of course having a lot of do-overs. You know how it goes.

But I think I may have created something I can use here.  I have been playing around with stitches and sizes. I don’t have a final final pattern created but I’m so darn close.

Maybe a vote is in order?? What do you think?

Crochet Flower Rug

Above is the first pattern I came up with for the Crochet Flower Rug.  As you can see, it is super large at about 14 inches. (wouldn’t that make a great pillow?!?).

It may be good for a huge living room rug, but I was thinking maybe a little smaller – even for a large room rug. Maybe 12 inch or even 10 inch flowers?

From what I can see in my favorite of the three Crochet Flower Rug Patterns below, it shows 8 flowers across.

So based on my calculations, if I used the 14 inch flower, I would have a final product of 9 feet across (assuming I would use all the same size flowers in the rug).

The 12 inch flower would produce an 8 foot side and the 10 inch would make a 6.5 foot side.  I think that may be what I’m looking for in a living room rug.

But, lets back up for a minute.  I really want to finish at least one crochet flower rug so I’m thinking of starting with a smaller kitchen rug for my first go at it.

Crochet Flower Rug

Which brings us to the smaller flowers I came up with.  I played around with different size stitches and hooks and these are my three favorites below.

The ones on the left are about 7 x 7 in and the center smaller one is 6 x 6 in.

Crochet Flower Rug

I like the pattern of the small center one the best. In my opinion, it has the perfect sized petals and a nice soft texture (yes, I have been walking on them) that bounces back and isn’t too uneven to walk on.

Crochet Flower Rug

What do you think? Can you picture a cute cozy little kitchen rug made out of these lovely flowers?

I would love to hear your thoughts in the comments below.

Crocheting with Beads – How to Resources and Inspiration

Ready to take your crochet to the next level? Once you know how to crochet – even just a single crochet, you can embellish with beads creating beautiful, one of a kind projects. Bead Crochet turns basic crochet scarves, clothing, purses, hats, flowers, and more into sparkling masterpieces!

Fabulous! See how adding a few beads can make a beautiful project even more beautiful?

In her book, The Beaded Edge: Inspired Designs for Crocheted Edgings and Trims, Midori Nishida shows you how to add a personal touch with beautiful beaded trims. The book offers 18 designs created with simple thread, a crochet hook, beading needle, and inexpensive beads. She also authored The Beaded Edge 2: More Inspired Designs for Crocheted Edgings and Trims.

Another great resource for bead crochet is Lily Chin’s book Knit and Crochet with Beads. Lily will take your crochet (or knitting!) to a whole new level with stylish designs and easy step-by-step instructions. She will inspire you to incorporate beads into masterful designs to add to clothing, pockets, collars, and pillows! This book is wonderful for all skill levels. Lily organized the book into techniques, whether you want to weave beads into a project or embellish completed projects. This is Lily’s 3rd book. She is also the author of Lily Chin’s Crochet Tips & Tricks: Shortcuts and Techniques Every Crocheter Should Know and Couture Crochet Workshop.

Bead Crochet is not just for embellishing clothing. You can create one of a kind jewelry pieces as well. In her online video Crocheting with Beads Online Class at Annie’s, Ellen Gormley teaches beginners bead crochet techniques including how to choose beads, which yarns to use, other beading tools and gadgets, 5 techniques using beads, along with patterns including a tube bracelet, wristlet clutch, shawlette, keyhole scarf, herringbone pendant and cat portrait.

Need to get down to the bare bones basics? Check out this Free Craftsy Tutorial, Just Bead It: How to Crochet with Beads. Here Ashly Little provides the basics with links to some fabulous patterns for inspiration.

Here’s a picture tutorial on How To Crochet: Single Crochet with Beads.

Leisure Arts has a few interesting books on Bead Crochet. Embellished Crochet which features easy embroidery and beads designs that dress up a stylish collection of eight fashions featuring (one of my favs!!) Caron International’s Simply Soft worsted weight yarn. Another interesting book by Leisure Arts is this Elegant Beaded Bags in Crochet 12 Designs for every occasion! At the very least, take a peek at these bags.  They are gorgeous!

Stitch Away Stress – April is National Stress Awareness Month

Stitch Away Stress – April is National Stress Awareness Month.

Did you know that April is National Stress Awareness Month? Either did I!! Did you know that crocheting (and knitting) is proven to reduce stress? YES! You’re so smart.  I thought so too and I typically crochet in the evenings while watching TV or while my honey is surfing the Internet before bed to relax. Do you crochet to relax?

You know what else I noticed? Increasing your yarn stash is also relaxing (not proven – just my own experience)! So buy more yarn too!!

Anyway, this month the Craft Yarn Council (CYC) has launched a campaign to educate the world about the health benefits of knitting and crocheting. They released a video Changing Global Health One Stitch at a Time and an article, The Truth About Knitting and Crocheting… They’re Good For You! You can read about all the positive ways that yarn crafts can affect your well-being.

Clara Parkes authored a book entitled, The Yarn Whisperer: Reflections on a Life in Knitting: My Unexpected Life in Knitting by Parkes, Clara (2013) Hardcover and is the founder and publisher of She says:

“Is knitting therapeutic? Heck yes. It’s a proven scientific fact, just like we know chocolate and red wine are good for us. Since turning my life over to yarn, I’ve talked to thousands of knitters who claim it’s cured everything from gout to their weight problems. I can’t speak to all cures, but it can certainly improve one’s mental health. I know it helps mine.”

stitch away stress 2

Back in the 1990’s, the Craft Yarn Council (CYC) has been surveying knitters and crocheters about why they participate in yarn crafts.  The most popular answer is that crocheting is a stress reliever, and provides creative fulfillment. In fact, a growing number of studies have been done about the positive health benefits of knitting and crocheting, with results including mood elevation and treating symptoms of disease. Amazing!!

yarn wall (800x613)

In addition to providing you all this information and ammunition as to why you need a WHOLE WALL OF YARN in your craft room and ALL DAY TO CROCHET, the CYC is sharing FREE PATTERNS for Lemon Stress Balls for knitters and crocheters. by designer, Twinkie Chan.  You can find the free crochet pattern here and check out Twinkie’s blog here. It’s a fun read!! Don’t forget to check in with the CYC all month long on their  Instagram, Facebook, Pinterest and Twitter pages  to find fun and unique ways to use knitting and crochet to #StitchAwayStress and share with them how you use these crafts to feel your best.

Ok my yarn loving friends, get your crochet hooks out and take some time to unwind and relax.  With all of the demands of work, family, financial stressors, and the many other things that can cause us stress, there is a low cost (Did you know that Michael’s has Lily Sugar and Cream cotton yarn for $0.97 this week!!! – Shop Knitting and Crochet Supplies at Michaels)  and highly effective treatment?  It’s called crochet.  The directions are simple: for maximum effectiveness, use as often as needed.

Michaels Knitting & Crochet

So take some time to unwind and make a couple pot holders or start a cozy afghan, or even work up a Lemon Stress Ball and crochet away your stress all month long! 🙂

Cotton Candy Stripes Crochet Baby Blanket

Cotton Candy Stripes Baby Blanket

Hello My Crocheting Friends,
Isn’t this the sweetest baby blanket? Not only cute but cuddly too.

Cotton Candy Stripes Baby Blanket 3

The stitch is a modified popcorn stitch, giving it a nice texture. I love the colors of this baby blanket and how they stand out against the white.

Cotton Candy Stripes Baby Blanket 5

It feels oh so baby soft. I used Simply Soft Yarn in Sage, Orchid, Blue Mint, and White and it is generously sized at 36” x 36”.

This reversible blanket would be the perfect addition to any nursery or as a gift to an expecting couple. Great blanket for the floor, crib, stroller, car seat or just to snuggle on a chilly day. Even can be used for a photo prop for Baby’s first photo session.

Cotton Candy Stripes Baby Blanket 2

Cotton Candy Stripes Baby Blanket 4

If you want to make your own, you can get the pattern in Leisure Arts Little Books entitled Baby Fresh Blankets. They are offering a 15% off coupon if you purchase directly from Leisure Arts.

The book is also available on Amazon.

There are three other patterns in the Book that are equally darling.  I think I may make the Lavender Lace Baby Afghan next.

If I don’t put it up for sale, I can give it to one of my future grand kids. Its never too early, right??

What crochet projects are you working on this week??

Hello My Crocheting Friends,

Doilies always bring treasured memories of my granny and the charm and beauty doilies added to her home.

Hers were made with cotton or linen thread and always crocheted. The openwork allowed her lovely wood furnishings to show through. They were utilitarian in that they protected her furniture from scratches from other decorative items and beautiful at the same time.
