Awesome Applique Roundup – Free Crochet Patterns on Karla’s Making It

If you are looking for Free Crochet Patterns, you came to the right place. My goal is to be the place you check FIRST for crochet inspiration and ideas. Let me know how I can make that happen. I welcome your ideas!!

Awesome Applique Roundup – Free Crochet Patterns on Karla’s Making It

Hello Friends,

How are you this fine week? I’m doing particularly well since the weather has been warming up.

We have been unusually cooped up here this winter with all the extra cold and rain.

While that has led to a lot of Crochet time, I am ready to work in the garden and hang out at the beach during the day!

How about you? Ready for summer??

Awesome Applique Roundup – Free Crochet Patterns on Karla’s Making It!

This has absolutely nothing to do with today’s Free Crochet Pattern Roundup, lol.

Or maybe it does… my short attention span is looking for short easy to finish projects – appliques are always good for this.

What to do with Crochet Appliques

There are so many things we can do with those little cuties. I have been brainstorming about doing a baby ABC book or even an afghan.

They are great for adding to the border of an easy blanket or purse. In fact, there are so many uses!

  • Magnets
  • Bookmarks
  • Sew together for wrap, scarf, tablecloth
  • Add to clothing/socks
  • Jewelry
  • Headband
  • Pacifier clip
  • Coasters
  • Garland
  • Ornaments
  • Pillows
  • Corsage, Bouquet, Boutonniere
  • so much more!!

What have you used Crochet Appliques on?

New in Annies Signature Designs

I stumbled across these two picture book-style ezine Lookbooks from Annies Signature Designs for their upcoming Annies Spring Breeze Collection for 2017 and I think you might want to go check it out.

It is totally beach inspired and fresh, yet timeless, elegant, and practical.  Right up my alley – and I know some of you like this beach inspired crochet theme as much as I do.

Annies Spring Breeze Collection features tanks, tees, pullovers and cardigans all geared to an audience of crocheters in their 30’s, 40’s, and 50+. That’s us!

Here are my favs:

With the California sun warming my heart I am excited to present the Spring Breeze Collection. Every element of this collection reflects my never-ending love for yarn and the needle arts. I’m fascinated with the details of the seashore, the shells, the rhythm of the tides, and the infinite pastel spectrum of the morning sky. The theme and color palette I chose for this collection captures some of these delicate tones. Please join me in a walk along the shore. Our footprints in the sand may wash away, but my passion woven into this collection will stay on-trend for years to come…
— Lena Skvagerson, Lead Designer, Annie’s Signature Designs

They snuck in some darling afghans on the back cover with no pattern in sight yet, hoping they come soon!

I really appreciate their use of natural fibers in this collection and the color palette is amazing. I think you will like it too.

New Yarn

While I was there, I saw their new yarn arrivals.  If you like yarn as much as I do, check out this new one. It’s recycled, so comfortable and look at those colors! YUM!

Free Crochet Heart Cup Cozy Pattern from Karla’s Making It

Hello Crochet Friends!

How’s February going for you? Filled with lots of LOVE I hope, with more to come.

How to you celebrate Valentines? Do you smother yourself with lots of love? I hope so. If we don’t treat ourselves well, who will – right?

One thing I like to do for myself is to have tea in the afternoons. Especially if it’s chilly and rainy like it has been lately. Do you like tea?

Thing is, since I don’t drink tea all the time, I forget about it and end up leaving it all over the house!

Once I didn’t find my cup until the next day… on the shelf… over the washer. mmm hmmmm

Anyway, most of the time I just misplace it for a little while. Just enough time for it to get cold… Please tell me I’m not the only one!

The handy dandy microwave warm it back up for me but it’s just not the same, ya know?

So to keep my tea warmer for a little longer and in the spirit of Valentine’s Day, I decided to whip up this Heart Cup Cozy all for me! (I posted the pattern below if you want to make one too!)

free crochet pattern for a Heart Cup Cozy!

It goes with a cute bee one that I made a while back.

bee cozy 1 logo

Do you like my Heart Cup Cozy?

The Bee Cozy is from this booklet Leisure Arts, Inc. called, appropriately enough, Crochet Cup Cozies.

It is a darling book if you like quick cute projects. I think cup cozies are darling gifts, especially for my girlfriends and the kids teachers!

It’s a good time to pick up this book, or even another one because Leisure Arts, Inc. has a coupon out.

Right now you can save 15% off everything in your shopping cart.Use promo code ART15. I always like looking through their 60% off Clearance Sale area too for some great deals.

I have these two cup cozies on my to do list. Cute huh?

Well, like I said, I wrote up a pattern for the heart cup cozy I made for myself and here it is so you can make one too!

Do you know how to use a graph? If you do, scroll down and you can just use the graph and have that baby whipped up in no time. I also put some notes for more advanced crocheters.

(Note that the tips are NOT approved by the National Crochet Foundation {is there such a thing?} and I’m sure somebody would have a cow if I published the pattern my way but a girl needs shortcuts, right??

free crochet pattern for a Heart Cup Cozy!

I used blue and red worsted weight cotton yarn from my stash and an H hook. You will also need a needle to weave in the ends.

The cup cozy is made by starting with a Foundation Single Crochet (FSC). If you don’t know how to do a FSC, you will NOT regret learning that little trick – what a time saver.  You can find lots of tutorials on YouTube.

Karla’s Heart Cup Cozy Free Crochet Pattern

Make a Foundation Single Crochet of 29 stitches. Join to the first stitch to form a ring.

Round 1: Ch 1, sc in the next 28 sts. Sl st to ch 1

Round 2: Repeat round 1

Round 3: Ch 1, sc in next 13 sts, changing color to red on the last part of the stitch. sc in next st with red, changing color back to blue on the last part of the st. Sc to end and sl st to Ch 1.

Round 4: Ch 1, sc in next 12 sts, changing color to red on the last part of the stitch. Sc in next 3 sts with red, changing color back to blue on the last part of the 3rd st. Sc to end and sl st to Ch 1.

Round 5: Ch 1, sc in next 11 sts, changing color to red on the last part of the stitch. Sc in next 5 sts with red, changing color back to blue on the last part of the 5th st. Sc to end and sl st to Ch 1.

Round 6: Ch 1, sc in next 10 sts, changing color to red on the last part of the stitch. Sc in next 7 sts with red, changing color back to blue on the last part of the 7th st. Sc to end and sl st to Ch 1.

Round 7: Ch 1, sc in next 9 sts, changing color to red on the last part of the stitch. Sc in next 9 sts with red, changing color back to blue on the last part of the 9th st. Sc to end and sl st to Ch 1.

Round 8-9: Repeat round 7

Round 10: Ch 1, sc in next 10 sts, changing color to red on the last part of the stitch. Sc in next 2 sts with red, changing color back to blue on the last part of the 2nd st. Sc in next 3 sts with blue, changing color back to red on the last part of the 3rd st. Sc in next 2 sts with red, changing color back to blue on the last part of the 2nd st. Sc to end and sl st to Ch 1.

Round 11-13: Ch 1, sc in the next 28 sts. Sl st to ch 1

Border: Ch 1 and sl st into same st. *Sk 1 stitch and make 5 sc in next st. Sk next st and sl st into next stitch. Repeat from * around. Join with a slip stitch and fasten off. Attach yarn to bottom and make the same border. Fasten off, weave in ends, and post a picture on the Karla’s Making It Facebook Page!!

heart cup cozy graph

Notes (optional):

  • After making the FSC, I made the border on the bottom of the cozy and then joined the ends. That way I didn’t have to go back and attach the yarn to do the border.
  • Even though I ch 1 on every round, I also make the first sc in the same st. I don’t like the gap that is created with just a ch 1. At the end of the round, I join with a sl st first sc and not the Ch 1.

So how does it look? I bet you did amazing. Hopefully this helped give you a have a relaxing afternoon and a little gift for you!

On Valentine’s and every day, I appreciate you! Thanks for visiting with me today.

Make it a Beautiful (and Loving) Day,

Hey there,

Hope my crochet friends are doing well.

Good news! I have ALL of the house unpacked!

You probably can relate to what a huge accomplishment that is! Am I right?

One of the best things is that I know where every single thing in the house is. Everything! It is organized and in it’s place. Yes, even all of the chip bag clips I bought over the past year because they kept disappearing, are stored and ready to again be lost.

I want to revel in this moment just for a minute because never, ever will this be so again. Once the princesses and princes get home all bets are off! Join me in a moment of silence. Ommmmmm Ommmmmmmmmmmmmmmm Thanks!!

Ok, Quick post for you today.  I had an email this week from a Crochet Friend who is in search of Amigurumi Backpack Patterns. I couldn’t let her down but to be honest, there really isn’t many free ones out there.

Here are some of the best free Amigurumi Backpacks I could find today. Also, scroll down for a super darling backpack and free patterns for animal heads to add!! I can’t wait to see all your work!

The Super Scarf – Your Biggest Accessory this Season!

Hello my Crochet Friends,

Have you seen all the posts and pins about the Super Scarf?

We are still having wonderful warm weather here in Southern California. I haven’t seen anyone wearing the huge scarf, but give it time. Although it may never get cold enough to actually wear the hugest scarf on the planet, it won’t stop some of us participating in a trend. Especially if it keep us warm, AND looks good! 🙂

It’s crazy how viral some of these patterns go.  I’ve seen mermaid tails for months.  A ton of people jumped on the braided cowl pattern, and a few of us made the Jelly Fish (even though we didn’t have a kid to make it for).

EDIT: The blue scarf below is actually knitted. I know – I had a tear too… but I added another beautiful one at the bottom for you since I love you so much. Sorry about that.

Well it’s called a Super Scarf is the latest trend in crochet, and for good reason. It’s warm, cozy, and pretty much feels like getting a warm fuzzy hug all day long!

What qualifies as a Super Scarf? Well, technically it is anything that is larger than a traditional scarf. But I would describe it as scarf, meets shawl, meets blanket all in one!

Really! Look at these things! They are huge! What a bold fashion statement! You cannot get cold with this thing around you!!

Its a great way to get some family off the Christmas List and to get rid of some of my stash 🙂

The other thing great about the Super Scarf is you can wear it so many ways!! There’s a video from Yarnspirations called 9 Ways to Tie your Scarf! Check it out and change up how you wear your super scarf!

EDIT: Here’s the bonus Free Scarf Pattern!! Again, Sorry about that. I’m gonna leave it for any knitters – and because I’m trying to learn 🙂

Is this something you are making for gifts? I think I might! What are some other gifts you like to make?

Update on The BEST – Most Lovely Crochet Flower Rug Ever Challenge and a New Sweepstakes from my favorite yarn company!

Crochet Flower Rug

Crochet Flower RugUpdate on The BEST – Most Lovely Crochet Flower Rug Ever Challenge and a New Sweepstakes from my favorite yarn company!

Hello My Crocheting Friends,

The BEST – Most Lovely Crochet Rug Ever Challenge has been a very popular post here on Karla’s Making It and I wanted to give you an update on my progress.

If you remember, we have been drooling over these fabulous rugs…

UPDATE – The Dahlia Flower Crochet Rug Pattern is now available in the KMI Shop!

Crochet Flower Rug

Man, every time I look at these I want one so badly!

I have been working with flower patterns, crocheting my little fingers to the bone and of course having a lot of do-overs. You know how it goes.

But I think I may have created something I can use here.  I have been playing around with stitches and sizes. I don’t have a final final pattern created but I’m so darn close.

Maybe a vote is in order?? What do you think?

Crochet Flower Rug

Above is the first pattern I came up with for the Crochet Flower Rug.  As you can see, it is super large at about 14 inches. (wouldn’t that make a great pillow?!?).

It may be good for a huge living room rug, but I was thinking maybe a little smaller – even for a large room rug. Maybe 12 inch or even 10 inch flowers?

From what I can see in my favorite of the three Crochet Flower Rug Patterns below, it shows 8 flowers across.

So based on my calculations, if I used the 14 inch flower, I would have a final product of 9 feet across (assuming I would use all the same size flowers in the rug).

The 12 inch flower would produce an 8 foot side and the 10 inch would make a 6.5 foot side.  I think that may be what I’m looking for in a living room rug.

But, lets back up for a minute.  I really want to finish at least one crochet flower rug so I’m thinking of starting with a smaller kitchen rug for my first go at it.

Crochet Flower Rug

Which brings us to the smaller flowers I came up with.  I played around with different size stitches and hooks and these are my three favorites below.

The ones on the left are about 7 x 7 in and the center smaller one is 6 x 6 in.

Crochet Flower Rug

I like the pattern of the small center one the best. In my opinion, it has the perfect sized petals and a nice soft texture (yes, I have been walking on them) that bounces back and isn’t too uneven to walk on.

Crochet Flower Rug

What do you think? Can you picture a cute cozy little kitchen rug made out of these lovely flowers?

I would love to hear your thoughts in the comments below.

How to Provide Comfort to a Loved One by Crocheting a Prayer Shawl

How to Provide Comfort to a Loved One by Crocheting a Prayer Shawl

(Bonus – Mother’s Day Gift Idea, Story Lockets – a steal!!)

Prayer Shawl
Friendship Shawl by RedHeart

Creating a prayer shawl is a warm gesture of compassion and comfort for anyone that needs healing or even just reassuring a hug. When bad things happen to someone we know, we sympathize with their pain and discomfort and can offer solace through our creativity.  Prayer shawls are a great project for not only helping to heal the recipient, but a great catalyst for healing ourselves.

You can call it whatever you want: Prayer Shawl, Comfort Shawl, Friendship Shawl, Peace Shawl, etc. The point is to offer blessings and/or healing to someone going through a rough time.  In addition, Prayer shawls are not only for a tragedy, but also wonderful gifts for celebrations like pregnancies and weddings.

Reasons for a Prayer Shawl

  • Person undergoing a medical procedure
  • For a loss or times of stress
  • During bereavement
  • Marriages or birth of a baby
  • During an illness and recovery
  • Graduation
  • Birthday
  • Anniversary
  • Holiday Gift
  • Or just because

With every stitch, you can pray for (or send intention to) a loved one or someone else in distress.  It is an opportunity to inspire, embrace, and celebrate, as well as to send strength, hope, and encouragement to anyone who needs it.

Many people think that Prayer Shawls are an indication of a specific religious tradition. That could not be further from the truth. Prayer Shawls are a comforting project whether you consider yourself spiritual or not. Below you will find information about the process of creating a prayer shawl even when you don’t pray.

Prayer Shawl
Pink Ribbon Shawl by Yarnspirations

Receiving a Prayer Shawl

A Prayer Shawl is a wonderful keepsake that offers comfort and warmth that can be handed down through generations or across to friends, offering recipients a reminder that there is someone who cares for them. The shawls are like a warm hug helping recipients to deal with difficult times; an illness, disaster, or grieving the loss of a loved one.  The person can physically feel the hope, warmth, love and care that went into each and every stitch.

Making a Prayer Shawl

The process of making a Prayer Shawl has as many benefits as receiving one.  Your own troubles melt away as you concentrate on intentionally sending good thoughts and blessings to the person who will receive your gift.  It relieves our sense of helplessness when there is nothing else we can do to ease their pain. It connects you to another person spiritually, opening up your heart and bringing prayer or meditation into your life.  It offers an excuse to pursuing creative projects and offers companionship by joining a crafting prayer/meditation group. Finally it can help you heal old wounds by offering comfort to those who are dealing with issues you went through.

If You Do Pray

This is a personal process and these are suggestions only. You could start with a prayer and a blessing as you begin your project.  Your blessings, kind words, and intentions are continued throughout the project.  You can finish with a final blessing before it is sent on it’s way.

Touching someone elses heart is so comforting to me.  I made an extra large shawl for a friend of mine who’s baby was born with heart issues.  She was so thankful and even cried when I gave it to her.  To this day, she occasionally will send me a text of a heart when she and little Kasidy are wrapped up together in their shawl.

Comfort Shawl by Lion Brand Yarns

Practices for People who don’t Pray

There are no official practices to crafting a Prayer Shawl. This is a personal endeavor and whatever you are comfortable doing during the project is up to you.  You can simply think good thoughts about the recipient, or you can intentionally send strength and healing.  You can repeat a phrase, such as, “I wish you good health,” or focus on love and compassion as you make your stitches. You could choose a quiet space with dim lighting, burn a candle or incense, or whatever else you choose for meditative crafting.

You don’t even have to make a shawl! Chemo caps, baby blankets, lapghans, scarves, and many other items are wonderful for prayer crafting. See the Free Crochet Pattern Index for other choices in meditative crochet.

My Recommendations

I have gotten some books over the past years with prayer shawl patterns in them that I really enjoyed making.  I will add links at the bottom of this post with my recommendations for books you can pick up that have wonderful patterns and some also have touching stories.  Another amazing book is Crochet Saved My Life: The Mental and Physical Health Benefits of Crochet by author Kathryn Vercillo. Kathryn is an expert on using crafting to heal.

You can visit the Free Crochet Shawl and Wrap Patterns for some FREE shawl patterns. I recommend using a cuddly, warm and cozy yarn like Bernat Caron Simply Soft Light Yarnor Lion Brand Homespun Yarn.  They are both available at Michaels and there are even a 40% off coupon this week!

If you don’t personally know anyone who you could make a prayer shawl for, then visit my Crochet (or Knit) for Charity Page for places that would love to receive your donation. Alternatively, you could contact a local hospital, hospice, or church to see if you can join a charity gifting group or if they take donations. If you cannot find anything locally, then think about a cause that you care about (Cancer, Organ Transplantation, Premature Babies) and contact that group to ask where they accept donations.

How has it helped you to make or receive a knit or crochet prayer shawl? Which prayers, affirmations or thoughts do you use when crafting for others? Share in the comments below!

Bonus – Mother’s Day Gift Idea

Right now Michael’s Arts and Crafts has Story Lockets on SALE at 30% off!! Have you seen these? They are so lovely.  My kiddos got me one last year for Mother’s Day and I truly cherish it.  They put each of their birthstones inside as well as a Mom heart, a seahorse and a shell (because I LOVE the beach). There are SO MANY charms available, you can create a one-of-a-kind gift that is so special.
