Awesome Applique Roundup – Free Crochet Patterns on Karla’s Making It

If you are looking for Free Crochet Patterns, you came to the right place. My goal is to be the place you check FIRST for crochet inspiration and ideas. Let me know how I can make that happen. I welcome your ideas!!

Awesome Applique Roundup – Free Crochet Patterns on Karla’s Making It

Hello Friends,

How are you this fine week? I’m doing particularly well since the weather has been warming up.

We have been unusually cooped up here this winter with all the extra cold and rain.

While that has led to a lot of Crochet time, I am ready to work in the garden and hang out at the beach during the day!

How about you? Ready for summer??

Awesome Applique Roundup – Free Crochet Patterns on Karla’s Making It!

This has absolutely nothing to do with today’s Free Crochet Pattern Roundup, lol.

Or maybe it does… my short attention span is looking for short easy to finish projects – appliques are always good for this.

What to do with Crochet Appliques

There are so many things we can do with those little cuties. I have been brainstorming about doing a baby ABC book or even an afghan.

They are great for adding to the border of an easy blanket or purse. In fact, there are so many uses!

  • Magnets
  • Bookmarks
  • Sew together for wrap, scarf, tablecloth
  • Add to clothing/socks
  • Jewelry
  • Headband
  • Pacifier clip
  • Coasters
  • Garland
  • Ornaments
  • Pillows
  • Corsage, Bouquet, Boutonniere
  • so much more!!

What have you used Crochet Appliques on?

Crochet Some Hygge – Free Cozy Patterns from Karla’s Making It

Crochet Some HyggeCrochet Some Hygge

Here in California we have been having rain like crazy.

I mean seriously crazy! Inches and inches fall every week. I don’t think we typically get more than an inch or so. We have been in a severe drought situation for years…

Not anymore! I’m told we are not totally in the clear but we are no longer listed as severe – YAY!

Anyway, along with all that rain, it’s been unusually COLD. Typically we will have 70F degree days this time of year. NOPE! Not this winter.

So I decided to take advantage of still experiencing cold weather by setting a warm fire, getting my cup of tea, and work on some Hygge crochet!

What is Hygge?

‘ Hygge ’ (pronounced ‘Hoo-ga’) is a Danish word, which means coziness.

I love cozy! Don’t you?

Imagine snuggling on the sofa with a cozy blanket, wearing your favorite blanket sweater while crocheting, enjoying a hot meal with family, drinking a warm cup of tea -all that is Hygge.

We do already have tons of free afghan, baby blanket, baby bootiesnewborn cocoons, cup cozies, granny square blankets, rugs, shawls and wrap patterns that qualify as Hygge here on Karla’s Making It.

But I wanted to add a few more cozy patterns that I have left on my to do list from winter, so here you go…

Make a Heart Cup Cozy with this latest free pattern from Karla’s Making It

Free Crochet Heart Cup Cozy Pattern from Karla’s Making It

Hello Crochet Friends!

How’s February going for you? Filled with lots of LOVE I hope, with more to come.

How to you celebrate Valentines? Do you smother yourself with lots of love? I hope so. If we don’t treat ourselves well, who will – right?

One thing I like to do for myself is to have tea in the afternoons. Especially if it’s chilly and rainy like it has been lately. Do you like tea?

Thing is, since I don’t drink tea all the time, I forget about it and end up leaving it all over the house!

Once I didn’t find my cup until the next day… on the shelf… over the washer. mmm hmmmm

Anyway, most of the time I just misplace it for a little while. Just enough time for it to get cold… Please tell me I’m not the only one!

The handy dandy microwave warm it back up for me but it’s just not the same, ya know?

So to keep my tea warmer for a little longer and in the spirit of Valentine’s Day, I decided to whip up this Heart Cup Cozy all for me! (I posted the pattern below if you want to make one too!)

free crochet pattern for a Heart Cup Cozy!

It goes with a cute bee one that I made a while back.

Do you like my Heart Cup Cozy?

The Bee Cozy is from this booklet Leisure Arts, Inc. called, appropriately enough, Crochet Cup Cozies.

It is a darling book if you like quick cute projects. I think cup cozies are darling gifts, especially for my girlfriends and the kids teachers!

It’s a good time to pick up this book, or even another one because Leisure Arts, Inc. has a coupon out.

Right now you can save 15% off everything in your shopping cart.Use promo code ART15. I always like looking through their 60% off Clearance Sale area too for some great deals.

I have these two cup cozies on my to do list. Cute huh?

Well, like I said, I wrote up a pattern for the heart cup cozy I made for myself and here it is so you can make one too!

Do you know how to use a graph? If you do, scroll down and you can just use the graph and have that baby whipped up in no time. I also put some notes for more advanced crocheters.

(Note that the tips are NOT approved by the National Crochet Foundation {is there such a thing?} and I’m sure somebody would have a cow if I published the pattern my way but a girl needs shortcuts, right??

free crochet pattern for a Heart Cup Cozy!

I used blue and red worsted weight cotton yarn from my stash and an H hook. You will also need a needle to weave in the ends.

The cup cozy is made by starting with a Foundation Single Crochet (FSC). If you don’t know how to do a FSC, you will NOT regret learning that little trick – what a time saver.  You can find lots of tutorials on YouTube.

Karla’s Heart Cup Cozy Free Crochet Pattern

Make a Foundation Single Crochet of 29 stitches. Join to the first stitch to form a ring.

Round 1: Ch 1, sc in the next 28 sts. Sl st to ch 1

Round 2: Repeat round 1

Round 3: Ch 1, sc in next 13 sts, changing color to red on the last part of the stitch. sc in next st with red, changing color back to blue on the last part of the st. Sc to end and sl st to Ch 1.

Round 4: Ch 1, sc in next 12 sts, changing color to red on the last part of the stitch. Sc in next 3 sts with red, changing color back to blue on the last part of the 3rd st. Sc to end and sl st to Ch 1.

Round 5: Ch 1, sc in next 11 sts, changing color to red on the last part of the stitch. Sc in next 5 sts with red, changing color back to blue on the last part of the 5th st. Sc to end and sl st to Ch 1.

Round 6: Ch 1, sc in next 10 sts, changing color to red on the last part of the stitch. Sc in next 7 sts with red, changing color back to blue on the last part of the 7th st. Sc to end and sl st to Ch 1.

Round 7: Ch 1, sc in next 9 sts, changing color to red on the last part of the stitch. Sc in next 9 sts with red, changing color back to blue on the last part of the 9th st. Sc to end and sl st to Ch 1.

Round 8-9: Repeat round 7

Round 10: Ch 1, sc in next 10 sts, changing color to red on the last part of the stitch. Sc in next 2 sts with red, changing color back to blue on the last part of the 2nd st. Sc in next 3 sts with blue, changing color back to red on the last part of the 3rd st. Sc in next 2 sts with red, changing color back to blue on the last part of the 2nd st. Sc to end and sl st to Ch 1.

Round 11-13: Ch 1, sc in the next 28 sts. Sl st to ch 1

Border: Ch 1 and sl st into same st. *Sk 1 stitch and make 5 sc in next st. Sk next st and sl st into next stitch. Repeat from * around. Join with a slip stitch and fasten off. Attach yarn to bottom and make the same border. Fasten off, weave in ends, and post a picture on the Karla’s Making It Facebook Page!!

heart cup cozy graph

Notes (optional):

  • After making the FSC, I made the border on the bottom of the cozy and then joined the ends. That way I didn’t have to go back and attach the yarn to do the border.
  • Even though I ch 1 on every round, I also make the first sc in the same st. I don’t like the gap that is created with just a ch 1. At the end of the round, I join with a sl st first sc and not the Ch 1.

So how does it look? I bet you did amazing. Hopefully this helped give you a have a relaxing afternoon and a little gift for you!

On Valentine’s and every day, I appreciate you! Thanks for visiting with me today.

Make it a Beautiful (and Loving) Day,

Free Pattern for a Super Cute Crochet Cat Hat from Karla’s Making It! #CatHat #PussyHat

Crochet Cat Hat Pattern

Free Pattern for a Super Cute Crochet Cat Hat from Karla’s Making It! #CatHat #PussyHat

Hundreds of women are expected to march in Washington D.C. on January 21, 2017 to attend the “Women’s March on Washington.”  And, because a knitting or crochet cat hat pattern that has gone viral, thousands of them will be wearing bright pink and cat-eared “pussy power hats” to drive home their point.

Crochet Cat Hat Pattern

I don’t have any plans to fly to D.C. and march. But I couldn’t resist whipping up this darling hat.

This is a easy pattern offering some quick instant gratification and a fun distraction from all the other WIPs you have around (or is that only me?). I had this cream colored yarn from my stash but you may want to dig out some pink if you are a supporter! Regardless is you support the Pussy Hat Project or not, its a super darling and fun hat anyway!

SUPPLIES:

INSTRUCTIONS:

coming soon – YOU CAN GET AN INEXPENSIVE, AD-FREE PRINTABLE PDF COPY FROM ETSY OR RAVELRY.

Row 1: Work a row of foundation single crochet that is about 11″ I started with 21 sts.

Row 2: Ch 2, turn. I worked my sts in the back loops only for a ribbed look. Working in back loops, hdc in next st and in each stitch across.

Crochet Cat Hat Pattern

Repeat until the piece is long enough to wrap around your head.  I made 31 rows.

Fold the piece in half and use a SC join to close off the top and side of the hat. Fasten off and join yarn to the open side.  SC evenly around. It took me 35 SCs. Sl st to join.

Turn hat inside out to hide the seams and lay flat. Use needle to stitch through the top corners to make ears. Tighten the thread to form ears. I tied knots to secure.

Weave in your ends! Then take a picture and post it on the Karla’s Making It Facebook Page!! Pretty please 🙂

****There is an update from 1/17/2017 below

****There is another update from 02/02/2017 below

Hi there crochet friends!

I hope all of you had peaceful and family-filled holiday.  Whew, always love these holidays but man, sometimes they go on for weeks!

That’s OK because we have a lot to celebrate in life.

Did you travel this year? We stayed home this time and were thankful that our family would visit with us. Even though I stayed home, I didn’t have much time to crochet! How about you? I always hear that people get to crochet more on their vacations, but I sure didn’t.

And isn’t it always that when you get back from vacation, things have piled up so much that the first few days back are hectic and filled with to do’s.

That isn’t going to happen to me (yet). I have decided not to return to work until I get ahead of you all on the Crochet Rug. So my pile whittling will take place at the end of the week so I can get going with the rug.

Bear with me as I release this line by line.  If anyone is waiting and has time to crochet, I want to get the most out I can today.

Instructions for Rows 26 – 28:

Round 26 (BLO): Hdc to back loop of first st. In the same st hdc again. Hdc in next 15 sts. *2 Hdc in next st, hdc next 15 sts* around. (309 Hdc)

26th Round of Petals (FLO): Join with a sl st to 1st hdc, Ch 3, htr in same st. Make 2 Tr in the next st. In next st htr, Ch 3, sl st. *Sl st in next st, Ch 3, htr in same st. Make 2 Tr in the next st. In next st, htr, Ch 3, sl st* around. (102 petals)

Round 27 (BLO): Hdc to back loop of first st. In the same st hdc again. Hdc in next 15 sts. *2 Hdc in next st, hdc next 15 sts* around. (309 Hdc)

27th Round of Petals (FLO): Join with a sl st to 1st hdc, Ch 3, htr in same st. Make 2 Tr in the next st. In next st htr, Ch 3, sl st. *Sl st in next st, Ch 3, htr in same st. Make 2 Tr in the next st. In next st, htr, Ch 3, sl st* around. (102 petals)

I am wanting my Rug to lay flatter so I will keep making these same rounds (2 Hdc in next st, hdc next 15 sts and the Petals) until further notice.

Update 1/17/2017

I am working on the rug today 🙂 For round 28 I am making a round of HDC with no increase. I will then make the 28th round of petals. At that time I should see if the lack of increase worked to make the rug lie flat. Note: On the final pattern, I will know to stop increasing earlier to prevent any rippling. I just don’t have the heart to rip out five rows back to make this rug perfect. My second rug will be much cleaner.

If you are still hanging in there with me, YAY! I’m so happy.

Update 2/2/2017

I have worked the last row as above and I am done with the pattern now. It fits perfectly next to my tub, so I plan on leaving the pattern at 27 rows. I am going to test the pattern, and make changes at about the half way mark. I will write up a clean copy, on one page and with no ads and it will be available in my Etsy store for a small fee soon.

This version of the pattern will remain here. Thank you to those who have made the rug along with me. I appreciate all you kind words and comments.

Some of you have been kind enough to share pictures your rugs (or other projects) on the Facebook Page. Thank you tons. I love seeing your work! I definitely wouldn’t work this hard making a pretty website and sharing projects if I didn’t get to share them with you! So Thanks for the encouragement. I appreciate you. xo

Make it a Beautiful Day,

Free Messy Bun Hat Crochet Pattern (Ponytail Hat) from Karla’s Making It #Redheart Unforgettable #CaronSimplySoft.

You HAVE to have seen the Messy Bun Hat Craze going on lately! Here’s a free pattern so that you can join in on the craze 🙂 xo

Messy Bun Hat Free Crochet Pattern

Free Messy Bun Hat Crochet Pattern (Ponytail Hat) from Karla’s Making It

Hey there Crocheters!!

Really quick, I had soooo many people ask me in the last couple days for this Free Messy Bun Crochet Pattern that I can’t answer individually anymore. The pattern was in my head and I told some over the phone AND wrote it up in shorthand in emails. I sat down this morning and wrote out a proper version for the rest of you guys. Sorry and thanks for being patient for those of you I didn’t get back to yesterday.

So, as you may know, this hat hit the Internet in the past week and went viral. Everyone in all my crochet groups are wanting to make some for themselves, for gifts… Have you seen it? The Messy Bun – or Ponytail hat – as it used to be called?

Free Messy Bun Hat Crochet Pattern
Source – Paid Pattern

This is not a new pattern but now has a modern use! Great for keeping your Messy Bun from getting extra messy in a hat!

So here you go, this is the Messy Bun Hat Pattern that I came up with for my friends who wanted a pattern and my customers who requested a hat!
Messy Bun Hat Free Crochet Pattern from Karla's Making It

Free Messy Bun Hat Crochet Pattern (Ponytail Hat) from Karla’s Making It

Materials:

I used Red Heart Unforgettable yarn in Sunrise
H/5.0 mm hook

Pattern notes:

Ch 1 or 2 doesn’t count as a stitch.  They are to fill the gap at the join.  The hat is easily customizable. You can make a wider or thinner band by making more or less than ch 9 at the beginning, as well as repeat Row 4 or remove rounds to make in larger or smaller.

Ribbed Band:

Ch 9.
Row 1: Hdc in 2nd ch from the hook and in each st across (8 sts)
Row 2: ch 1, turn. Hdc in the Blo (Back Loop Only) in each st across (8 sts)
Repeat row 2 until desired length. 46 rows shown.
Join smaller sides with a slip stitch and keep yarn attached.  We are going to keep going with the hat part.

Hat:

Round 1: Ch 1, Sc around the band. You should end with the same amount of stitches as there are rows in the band. (As shown 46 sts) Join with a sl st in the 1st st.
Round 2: Ch 1, Sc in each st, join.
Round 3: Ch 2, Dc in each st around, join.
Round 4-6: Repeat row 3.

Round 7: Ch 2, Dc in the next 6 stitches. Dc2tog. *Dc in the next 6 sts, Dc2tog* Repeat to the end of row, join.
Round 8: Ch 2, Dc in next 5 st, Dc2tog. *Dc in the next 5 sts, Dc2tog* repeat to end of row, join.
Round 9: Ch 2, Dc in the next 4 st, Dc2tog. *Dc in the next 4 st, Dc2tog* repeat to the end of row, join.
Round 10: Ch 2, Dc in the next 3 st, Dc2tog. *Dc in the next 3 st, Dc2tog* repeat to the end of row, join.
Round 11: Ch 1, Sc in each st around, join.
Round 12: Sl st around, join. Bind off and weave in ends.

Enjoy!!

If you use one of my patterns for your project, I would love to see your work! Post a pic on on the Karla’s Making It Facebook Page

My rug measures about 32 inches across.  Getting big and heavy! I love it.  It is so soft to walk on!

So I’m moving!! I know, it’s so exciting but sooooooo much work!!

Seriously, when you are a yarn hoarder like I am, it is maddening to the whole family to move (hehehe). And I even snuck some over to the new place in my car!!

I know – it’s a sickness. None of my crochet friends are yarn hoarders?! It’s really just me? I need therapy!

But anyway, you probably did’t know this but this website has been constructed and written and crocheted on my bed! Yep, hours and hours and hours spent in my room working my little fingers to the bone (insert violin music here). Feel sorry for me? Well you won’t when I show you my new craft space! I’m so excited! Stay tuned

I know, I know… you are really just here for the rug ( 😉 ) Let’s get to it then!

Introducing the Alice in Wonderland Inspired Free Crochet Leg Warmer Pattern – from Karla’s Making It

I don’t know what it is about Alice in Wonderland that made it one of my favorite childhood movies, but it was one of my favorites!

My friends all loved the princesses and wanted to be Cinderella. They pretended to dance around in their fake ball gowns and their mother’s high heels, waiting for some lame prince to rescue them.

But not me. I’m not content to sit in some glittery pumpkin! A ball sounded boring and those shoes – seriously? Nope – not me at all.

I have always been more the adventurous, curious, baby blue dress wearing (with shorts under, of course), Mary Jane shoe type anyway.

And Mary Janes are the perfect compliment to my Alice in Wonderland Inspired Crochet Leg Warmers!

Alice in Wonderland Inspired Crochet Leg Warmer Free Pattern

This is a super easy pattern using the HDC stitch and three rows of each color! Great for a beginner!

You can customize them by adding or taking away chains in the beginning.

I recommend trying on your leg warmer at the largest part of your calf after a few rows to make sure they fit how you want them to.

But if you haven’t started yet, head on over to the first page of the pattern where you can find the supplies you need as well as some notes on the pattern. Or maybe you need page 2? I hope you will join us. We don’t know as of this writing how large we are going to make our rug, but I’m going to keep going if you are.  Let me know
